An evolutionary genetics question about the difference in mutation numbers between genes.?

About 75% of all cystic fibrosis mutations are the same: a deletion of three bases coding for amino acid 508 in CFTR. In contrast as an example there are over 1000 deleterious mutations known in the gene BRCA1. Explain these obervations.
